Why Kids Need a Kids-Only Emergency Room

Baby in the NICU When your child – aged newborn to 21 years old – has any type of medical emergency, it’s important to immediately get them the best care available. And, whenever possible, that care should come from medical professionals specially trained to treat the unique needs of children.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department was built with children and their families in mind. Part of the only children’s hospital in Suffolk County, Stony Brook Children’s Emergency Department offers:

  • A private entrance and child-friendly waiting room that prevents kids from being exposed to adult medical emergencies
  • Nine private treatment rooms that protect patient privacy and accommodate the child and up to two family members
  • Age-appropriate care, for newborns to children 21 years of age, that factors in the child's physical, social and emotional development
  • “Ouchless medicine” techniques to help reduce or eliminate pain
  • The only Level 1 Pediatric trauma center in Suffolk County, which means that the most severe emergencies get sent to us
  • A large staff of board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and pediatric intensivists
  • 24-hour care, 7 days a week
  • Free valet parking so parents can remain with their children
  • Child-sized equipment, gowns, IVs, airway management tools and other medical necessities
  • Access to Child Life Services professionals who explain procedures in kid-friendly, age-appropriate terms, as well as relieve anxiety and provide distraction.

As a parent, you should plan ahead for where you should go if your child should become acutely ill or injured. Carl Kaplan, MD, Interim Chief of the Pediatric Emergency Department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, provides some important information about pediatric emergency care.
