Allergy and Immunology
Across the nation, including in Suffolk County, the number of infants, children and adolescents with allergic and immunologic disorders continues to increase.
Food allergies, in particular, are a growing concern as severe reactions may occur. Accurate diagnosis, ongoing education and long-term follow-up are important for patients with allergies or primary immunodeficiency diseases.
At Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, the Allergy & Immunology Division offers the most up-to-date treatments, access to state-of-the-art technology and a child-centered approach to care that takes into account the child’s physical, emotional and developmental needs. We work closely with the other pediatric specialists at Stony Brook Children's to ensure a team approach to children with complex medical disorders. In 2014, Stony Brook Children's was approved as a Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) Specialty Care Center by the New York State Department of Health.
Services
The Allergy & Immunology Division cares for children with asthma, allergies and primary immunodeficiency diseases. The division works closely with many of the other departments at Stony Brook Children’s, including Pediatric Pulmonology, Pediatric Gastrointestinal Medicine, Pediatric Dermatology, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Rheumatology, to deliver appropriate, multidisciplinary care.
Most services are delivered on an outpatient basis, but board-certified Pediatric Allergy/Immunology physicians are available for in-patient hospital consultations.
The Allergy & Immunology Division cares for children with:
- Allergic conjunctivitis
- Allergic rhinitis (Hay Fever)
- Asthma
- Atopic dermatitis (Eczema)
- Angioedema (Swelling)
- Drug allergies
- Eczema
- Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Food allergies
- Hives (Urticaria)
- Immune deficiencies such as Hypogammaglobulinemia, Common Variable Immunodeficiency, DiGeorge Syndrome
- Insect sting allergy
- Sinusitis
- Allergic reactions to vaccines
- Evaluation of children with recurrent infections or recurrent fever
In our outpatient allergy clinics, we perform prick skin testing for environmental and food allergens. Antibiotic skin testing is also available, along with vaccine skin testing for children who have had allergic reactions to antibiotics or vaccines. Our physicians administer allergy immunotherapy injections for patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.
In-office oral food challenges to foods such as milk, egg and peanut are performed to confirm loss of food allergies. We also offer in-office food challenges with baked egg or baked milk for selected patients. Peanut oral immunotherapy (Palforzia) is available for appropriate patients.
Pulmonary function testing (spirometry) is an additional tool for patients with chronic cough or known asthma. We perform immune evaluations for children with recurrent infections, chronic rhinosinusitis or recurrent fevers. We also evaluate newborn infants who have abnormal screening tests for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency and care for children with primary immunodeficiency disorders who often require immune globulin replacement therapy and other complex therapies.
Because asthma, allergies and immune disorders are typically chronic conditions, the Allergy/Immunology Division follows children over time, performing close monitoring and adjusting treatment as needed. Many childhood allergies and even asthma may be outgrown over time.
Available treatment options include allergy medications (pharmacotherapy) for disorders such as hay fever. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) are considered for patients not responding to medication. Children with food allergies may be instructed in the emergency use of adrenaline autoinjectors, as well as dietary management. Ongoing patient education is helpful for all of our patients, including those with food allergies, environmental allergies and primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Research and Education
Research and teaching are important elements of Stony Brook Children’s Allergy and Immunology program. As Suffolk County's only academic medical institution, Stony Brook is committed to training the next generation of physicians. Pediatric and Internal Medicine residents rotate through Allergy/Immunology, gaining valuable experience in state-of-the-art medicine. We also teach first, third and fourth year medical students at the Renaissance School of Medicine.
Dr. Schuval has conducted research investigating the role of anaphylaxis simulation in training of medical students and residents in the diagnosis and treatment of anaphylaxis. Stony Brook Children's Hospital was a site for a nationwide multicenter study of monthly subcutaneous gamma globulin replacement for children with primary immunodeficiency disorders. Dr. Schuval is currently studying outcomes in Eosinophlilic Esophagitis and food allergy.
