Pediatric/Adult Rheumatology Transitional Clinic
The transition of clinical care from pediatric to adult rheumatology usually occurs between the ages of 18 and 24 years. During this time, many young adults encounter challenges that can lead to non-adherence and poor clinical outcomes.
The Pediatric/Adult Transitional Clinic was established at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital to ensure an organized and seamless transition of care. The clinic enables young adults to transition from a pediatric to adult health care model. The physicians at this clinic include: pediatric and adult rheumatologists who are board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and rheumatology.
Our goal is to provide high quality multidisciplinary care and guidance for our patients, to minimize non-compliance, and optimize clinical outcomes during their transition from pediatric to adult rheumatology care.

We serve patients with rheumatic diseases including:
- Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)
- Systemic autoimmune diseases
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
- Spondyloarthropathies, Psoriasis, Psoriatic arthritis
- Dermatomyositis/Polymyositis
- Scleroderma (systemic and linear)
- Granulomatous with Polyangiitis (Wegener’s Granulomatosis)
- Henoch-Schonlein Purpura

Julie Cherian, MD
Pediatric Rheumatology
Julie Cherian, MD is Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. She completed her pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery / New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center.
She was recruited to Stony Brook University in 2010 to create the division of Pediatric Rheumatology and is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Rheumatology.
Ayse Bag Ozbek, MD
Adult Rheumatology
Ayse Bag Ozbek, MD is Assistant Professor of Medicine in SBUH. She trained as an adult rheumatology fellow in Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University in New York. After completing pediatric residency at Istanbul University in Turkey, she trained in the combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program in SBUH. She joined Stony Brook University Hospital in 2015. She is board certified in Medicine, Pediatrics, and adult rheumatology.
