Guidelines for Visitors
Parents/Legal Guardians:
- We encourage family presence at your child’s bedside. Parent(s)/Legal Guardian(s) may be with their child 24 hours a day.
- Two people at one time may remain with your child at the bedside (includes parents/ legal guardians).
Siblings:
- We welcome patient’s siblings (5 years of age and older). Siblings names will be entered into our visitor system at the time of admission and will be issued a special sibling pass. Only these siblings will be able to visit during the hospitalization.
- Siblings must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older, and remain in the patient’s room during their visit.
Visitors:
- Visitors, friends and other relatives (12 and older) may visit daily between 11am and 8 pm. After 8 p.m. only parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are permitted.
- All visitors must wear a badge at all times (photo ID is required at check-in).
- If you’re sick please don’t visit for the health and safety of our patients.
- Latex balloons, live plants or flowers are not permitted in patient rooms. Mylar balloons are permitted.
- Our campus and parking areas are smoke-free.
- Please make every effort to maintain hospital quiet hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- Guests of the patient or family including but not limited to a spouse, domestic partner (including same sex domestic partner), family member or friends for emotional support during the course of their stay.
- Visitation privileges can not be denied based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
Checkout Process:
- Visitors including parents/legal guardians are asked to follow the check out process at the front desk of the children’s hospital daily. This process allows us to track the visitors for each patient and help facilitate a visit when a new visitor arrives.
Pediatric Emergency Department:
- 2 Parents or Legal Guardians are welcome 24 hours a day
If your child is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), placed on isolation or in other specialty units, we recommend that you check at that unit’s nursing station for specific information about visiting.
- Guests must pick up a pass at the Information Desk in the Children’s Hospital lobby before visiting patient floors.
- We request that you limit visitation to two guests in a room at one time to allow for your child’s rest and recovery.
- One parent may sleep at the child’s beside during the night.
Please Remind Others:
- Everyone is required to wash their hands with soap and water or foam when entering and leaving a patient’s room.
- People with colds, sore throats, fever, etc., or any contagious diseases should not visit patients.
- People who might have been in contact with anyone with a contagious disease (diagnosed or receiving treatment for) should check with the patient’s nurse prior to visiting.
- Visitors should maintain a quiet environment and avoid unnecessary noise.
- Visitors should refrain from sitting on the hospital bed, as well as eating in the room.
- Visitors may be asked to leave the room during tests or treatments, or when the doctor or nurse needs to see the patient.
- Visitors must not take pictures, video and/or voice recordings of patients and staff.
Restrooms
For health and safety reasons, visitors are not permitted to use the bathroom facilities in patient rooms. Public restrooms are located on the main level of the Children’s Hospital, as well as on each patient floor, and are gender neutral and handicap accessible.
For your safety and protection, please use the toilet seat covers that are provided in all restrooms. Wash your hands and turn the faucet with a dry paper towel.

Gifts
The Stony Brook University Hospital Gift Shop in the lobby of the main hospital sells gifts, greeting cards, postage stamps, candy, flowers and toiletries.

Monday through Friday, 8 am to 8:30 pm
Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm
All visitors should check with the nurse before bringing gifts to patients.
